Seven Sites That Help Recruit a Better Board

Growth for Good provides consulting on board development and we are often asked how to recruit new board members. Below, we are sharing seven essential national and local websites that will help you recruit diverse board members excited to provide their skills to your board of directors.

By profiling your board and organization outside of your usual network, new and diverse ‘potential’ trustees and donors will learn about your organization’s work and directly contact you. First, your organization will need to outline your board member expectations in a job description. If you don’t already have one ready for board recruitment, here’s a link to Growth for Good’s past blog post and free job description checklist.

Websites to Post Your Nonprofit’s Board Job Description

BoardLead.com is a nonprofit board placement, and training program managed by Cause Strategy Partners. Thanks to the generous support of their corporate partners, nonprofit participation in BoardLead is 100% free.

boardnetUSA is a free resource where nonprofit boards needing new board members and individuals interested in serving as trustees can find each other. The site is populated with board candidate profiles that can be searched according to specific recruitment needs.

BoardServeNYC/United Way of New York City offers a free program that matches NYC-based nonprofits with board candidates who are prescreened and have received relevant training.

BoardStrong, previously charityStrong and Governance Matters, offers a free board matching portal for nonprofits nationally. Plus, they offer a robust good governance guide.

National Council of Nonprofits is a robust membership organization and has a searchable database for various free resources. Click here to view their Boards and Governance tools and resources.

NYCService.org is a hub for volunteer engagement in New York City and offers free training tools. The Mayors’ Service Recognition Program is also a great way to acknowledge and retain super board members.

Volunteer New York! is a volunteer connector agency that serves Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam in the Lower Hudson Valley. They also offer annual Nonprofit Board Boot Camp and Speed Dating programs. We love their simple online Google sign-up form that local nonprofits can use!

VolunteerMatch is a national search portal to post your board job description or any volunteer position. Their search engine is robust including cause areas, skills, and virtual-only opportunities to search.
